Description
Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Director of Utilities, performs job duties within the Water Distribution System and the Sanitary Sewer Collection System.
Essential Job Functions:
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
1. Reads residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial water meters.
2. Repairs, tests, adjusts, and maintains meters, recording devices, and piping related to water meters.
3. Installs new meters and other meter related equipment for customers.
4. Turns water service on and off.
5. Inspects meters for evidence of malfunctions or evidence of tampering.
6. Locates, exposes, or cleans curb boxes.
7. Makes connections for temporary water service.
8. Meets with customers to review their meter problems and provide information on water use.
9. Collects water samples.
10. Does maintenance and repair of fire hydrants and valves. Turns valves, and conducts valve exercise program.
11. Flushes water mains.
12. Locates, inspects, and repairs water system manholes and water valve box.
13. Does maintenance and repair at the water tower and the water booster station.
14. Repairs water mains and water services.
15. Locates and marks water and sewer lines for the Miss Dig System.
16. Does inspection of sanitary sewer mains and manholes.
17. Does maintenance and repairs of sanitary sewer lift stations.
18. Works with lawn and maintenance equipment. Understands the safety requirements of equipment.
19. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Additional education or vocational training, preferred.
- Ability to obtain an S4 license within 2 years of hire date.
- Valid Vehicle Operator’s License, satisfactory driving record, and the ability to maintain one throughout employment.
- CDL or ability to obtain one, preferred.
- Knowledge of departmental safety practices, procedures, equipment, and apparatus.
- Knowledge of general township operations and policies to effectively direct and assist customers.
- Familiarity with or ability to be trained within 60 days of hire in MS Office Suite, relevant GIS applications, and BS&A.

An employee in this position spends the majority of their time in the field at various project sites participating in job duties that involve moderate to extreme physical exertion. This may include work sites with treacherous terrain, fumes, dust, chemicals or other hazardous materials, loud machinery, and equipment, climbing to extreme heights such as a water tower, and other dangers associated with utilities and general utilities maintenance activities.
An employee in this position must have the strength, stamina and physical coordination needed to gain access to these sites and to participate in heavy physical labor, such as completing water main repairs which involves digging by hand, hand turning large valves and working in the confined space of an excavated site or trench. Employee must be able to lift up to 80 lbs. The employee must have the vision capabilities and manual dexterity needed to operate vehicles and heavy equipment, and is required to do all of this in every type of weather condition, including extremely adverse weather conditions, extreme heat, and severe cold weather. Constant walking outdoors in all types of weather, carrying and lifting, as well as and frequent climbing up and down stairs are required to complete the duties of this position.
On-call availability to handle work problems and respond to emergency situations at all hours is required.
