You Know Massage Should Be More Than a Routine
You became a massage therapist because you wanted to help people feel better in their bodies.
But maybe you have been working somewhere that expects you to follow the same routine, stay within a narrow treatment style, or move clients through as quickly as possible.
At Body Altar, we believe great bodywork starts with listening.
We are looking for a thoughtful, skilled massage therapist who wants the freedom to slow down, pay attention, blend techniques, and treat the person in front of them—not simply repeat a memorized sequence.
About Body Altar
Body Altar helps people reconnect with their bodies in a world that rewards constant productivity and disconnection.
Our clients often come to us looking for targeted pain relief, less stress, improved movement, and better function. Many are desk workers and high-performing professionals who want more than a basic relaxation massage.
We combine science-informed therapeutic work with genuine human connection. We listen carefully, communicate clearly, and create the conditions that allow the body to regulate, recover, and heal.
Our goal is to build something bigger than one therapist while preserving the care, quality, and philosophy that make Body Altar different.
Who This Position Is For
This may be a strong fit for you if you:
Are warm, calm, grounded, and emotionally mature
Enjoy therapeutic, slow, and focused bodywork
Know how to listen with your hands
Customize each treatment instead of following a fixed routine
Are curious about complex cases and enjoy looking for patterns
Communicate clearly before, during, and after treatment
Respect consent and help clients feel safe, heard, and involved
Welcome coaching, feedback, and continued learning
Take ownership of your work and follow through on commitments
Want to contribute to a growing practice rather than simply rent a room
Believe excellent client retention comes from excellent care—not pressure or aggressive sales
You may be especially happy here if you have been working in a setting with a limited scope and are looking for more room to think, learn, and practice creatively.
What You Will Do
As a Body Altar massage therapist, you will:
Perform customized therapeutic massage sessions based on each client’s goals, symptoms, preferences, and feedback
Complete thoughtful client intakes and ask useful questions
Observe verbal and nonverbal cues throughout the session
Adjust pressure, pace, positioning, and technique based on the client in front of you
Clearly explain your treatment approach and recommendations
Obtain consent naturally and consistently
Create simple, individualized treatment plans when appropriate
Recommend follow-up care without using high-pressure sales tactics
Maintain accurate and timely client notes
Prepare, clean, and reset the treatment room
Protect the quality of the client experience from beginning to end
Participate in regular check-ins, mentorship, feedback, and skill-sharing
Help create a calm, collaborative, and professional clinic environment
Required Qualifications
Active Arizona massage therapy license
Graduate of an accredited massage therapy program
Professional liability insurance that can appropriately name or cover location at Body Altar
Approximately two or more years of consistent massage experience in a clinic or therapeutic setting, Spa considered based on additional training.
Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, contraindications, and client safety
Ability to provide therapeutic and individualized massage without relying on a fixed routine
Strong communication, professionalism, and time-management skills
Dependable transportation and reliable attendance
Ability to complete client notes and follow clinic systems consistently
Physical stamina and ability to stand and perform multiple sessions per day
Preferred Experience
Experience or interest in the following is helpful:
Myofascial or fascial-focused work
Deep tissue and therapeutic massage
Slow, specific, “grippy” bodywork
Working with shea butter or very minimal lotion/oil.
Cupping
IASTM or scraping techniques
Nervous-system-aware care
Mixed-modality treatment
Ayurvedic principles or a desire to learn them
Proficient with technology to independently handle iPad-based SOAP notes and cloud POS checkout systems
You do not need to know everything. Humility, curiosity, and a willingness to learn matter more than pretending to have every answer.
This Position Is Probably Not a Fit If You:
Give every client essentially the same massage
You give massages with a lot of oil and glide
Believe you already know everything you need to know
Struggle to receive feedback
Frequently arrive rushed, distracted, or unprepared
Talk more than you listen
Ignore client preferences, boundaries, or consent
Cut corners with cleaning, documentation, or client care
Create gossip, drama, or tension within a team
Blame other people when something goes wrong
Treat massage as only a paycheck
Prefer to work entirely independently without collaboration or accountability
Are more attached to being right than getting the best result for the client
What You Can Expect
A thoughtful onboarding and mentorship period during your first 90 days
Regular check-ins and feedback in both directions
Opportunities to observe and learn the Body Altar approach
Training around intake, communication, consent, treatment planning, and client education
Clear written procedures and expectations
Gradually increasing independence as trust and consistency grow
Opportunities for continued learning and skill-sharing
A calm and intentionally designed treatment environment
Linens and all supplies provided
