Description
The Orthotic Technician will provide all technical aspects of the fabrication process necessary to produce custom orthoses for children and adults. He/she will consult and assist clinical members of the health care team. This position will use excellent current knowledge of the machinery, tools, techniques, raw materials, and components available for use in the design and fabrication of orthoses.
Here's what you'll get to do:
Provide production of positive plaster casts.
Provide fabrication and preparation of orthosis for fitting according to work order prepared by clinician.
Provide high temperature thermoplastic vacuum forming and low temperature thermoplastic molding.
Provide production of custom components (leather straps and pads for spinal braces and lower extremity braces, etc.)
Support and collaborate with the clinical staff by providing/sharing knowledge concerning the design, selection of materials, and techniques to be used during the fabrication and fitting of each custom orthosis.
Assist clinical staff during the casting and fitting of children if required.
Assist clinical staff with the finishing, adjusting and repairing of orthosis.
Assist clinical staff with the modification of plaster casts if required.
Evaluate new materials, designs, fabrication techniques, and componentry, for potential use in orthosis.
Identify orthotic research opportunities.
Participate in research initiatives.
Attend continuing education courses/conferences.
Produce and maintain the supply of custom stock items used for orthosis fabrication (straps, pads, spinal brace components, etc.)
Initiate online requisitioning of raw materials and components used for the fabrication of orthosis.
Understand the health risks associated with hazardous materials and specialized equipment used in the fabrication process for providing a safe work environment for all staff.

Requirements
Diploma in Orthotics/Prosthetics
Previous work experience in orthotics or prosthetics
Previous pediatric experience preferred
Good spatial and form perception, manual and finger dexterity
Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
Demonstrated initiative and aptitude for creative problem solving
Ability to work as a member of the interdisciplinary health care team
A commitment to understanding and aiding in the pursuit of equity, diversity & inclusion
