Description
OverviewThe Head Starter is responsible for overseeing the daily starting operation and helping deliver an organized, efficient, and first-class golf experience for members and guests. This position serves as a key operational link between the Golf Professional Staff and golfers while maintaining the standards and expectations of the golf operation. In addition to managing daily play from the first tee, the Head Starter oversees ForeTees teesheet management, pace of play and the on-course member experience. The Head Starter is expected to provide professional, consistent, and proactive service while maintaining positive energy, strong communication, attention to detail, and an appropriate sense of urgency.
Experience Required
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of five years of experience working within a recognized golf club or comparable golf operation preferred.
- Previous experience with tee-time management, starting operations, Player Assistant operations, or golf staff supervision strongly preferred.
- Experience with ForeTees or comparable tee-time management software preferred.
- Strong knowledge of golf etiquette, pace-of-play procedures, golf course operations, and basic Rules of Golf.
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with members, guests, staff, and management.
Essential Responsibilities
- Welcome, greet, and accommodate members and guests arriving for play in a friendly, professional, and orderly manner.
- Coordinate the starting of players for regular tee-time play, shotgun starts, tournaments, special events, and other golf activities.
- Maintain an organized first-tee operation and communicate effectively with golfers regarding starting times, course conditions, cart rules, pace-of-play expectations, and other pertinent information.
- Work closely with the Golf Professional Staff to maximize tee sheet utilization while maintaining an exceptional golf experience.
- Make appropriate adjustments to starting procedures based on weather, course conditions, tournaments, maintenance requirements, or changes in daily play.
- Manage and monitor the ForeTees tee-time system as it relates to daily golf operations.
- Review tee sheets in advance to identify potential operational issues, special requests, groups, events, or periods of high demand.
- Assist with tee-time adjustments, player changes, cancellations, and other modifications necessary for efficient daily operations.
- Maintain accurate player and tee-time information and communicate relevant changes to the Golf Professional Staff and Player Assistants.
- Help ensure established tee-time policies and golf operation procedures are consistently followed.
- Monitor pace of play throughout the day and proactively address situations that may negatively impact the golf experience.
- Coordinate with Player Assistants to maintain appropriate spacing between groups and resolve pace-of-play concerns professionally and consistently.
- Maintain communication with the Golf Professional Staff regarding significant delays, course issues, weather concerns, or member situations requiring additional attention.
- Maintain an active presence throughout the golf operation and anticipate issues before they negatively affect the member experience.
- Assist the Golf Professional Staff in creating and executing special on-course experiences that enhance the overall member and guest experience.
- Coordinate appropriate setup, signage, contests, amenities, and other operational details associated with special golf experiences.
- Identify opportunities to improve the presentation, organization, and service provided throughout the golf operation.
- Maintain a strong understanding of the membership and individual member preferences while providing consistent service to all golfers.
- Maintain consistent communication with the Director of Golf, Head Golf Professional, Golf Professional Staff, Golf Course Maintenance Department, and other departments as necessary.
- Maintain appropriate records, schedules, and operational information related to assigned responsibilities.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Golf or Head Golf Professional.
