Description
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Work involves the operation of medium and power-driven equipment involved in the collection of refuse and garbage. Employees are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of assigned equipment.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is under the supervision of an employee of higher grade.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following:
Drive a packer-type, side-arm or bucket truck on an established route in picking up waste, recyclables and yard waste.
Properly dispose of residential and other trash, refuse, garbage, recyclables and yard waste, on an established route or as assigned.
Perform related manual labor to pick up waste, recyclables and yard waste.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT:
Ability to understand, follow and transmit oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with the public and other employees
Reasonable knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of heavy duty vehicles and power-driven equipment.
Good physical condition and stamina
Reasonable knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in medium and heavy duty vehicle operation.
Reasonable knowledge of the related occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary for the protection of employees and the public.
Ability to operate medium equipment skillfully, safely and according to applicable traffic rules and regulations.
Reasonable knowledge of local streets, roads and boundaries.
Reasonable ability to perform heavy manual labor, including lifting trash cans and other heavy objects, for an extended period, sometimes in inclement weather.
Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with the public and other employees.
Requirements
Requirements:
- Graduation from an accredited high school or G.E.D. equivalent.
o ORIGINAL diploma or official transcripts REQUIRED at time of application - Possession of a valid commercial driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Michigan with the proper indorsements (Class B with airbrake).
- Driving record must meet city’s standards for insurability.
o Driver’s license REQUIRED with application
Pay rate: $27.99/hour - $31.30/hour (After 2 years)
