Description
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Perform safe and efficient operation of light to heavy automotive, construction and power equipment to maintain grounds, structures and streets under the responsibility of the Division of Public Works.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is under the supervision of an employee of a higher grade.
SUPERVISION GIVEN: No supervision is exercised over other employees but may lead workers in specific tasks.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following:
Operate related medium and heavy equipment in maintenance and repair work.
Trim, remove, plant and maintain trees, lawns and other landscaping.
Operate trucks on road maintenance and hauling asphalt, gravel, slag and similar materials.
Operate a power-driven road roller in patching and ironing asphalt surfaces and other road and street maintenance work.
Operate a street sweeper, front end loader, digger, claw and backhoe.
May perform service work on equipment and make minor repairs and adjustments.
Perform related manual labor.
Operate trucks for plowing snow and the spreading of salt on City streets.
Operate a grader in shaping and maintaining road surfaces and areas designated for recreational use.
Operate a heavy track-type bulldozer for grading, leveling and excavating roads.
Erect, repair and maintain playground equipment and recreational structures.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT:
Reasonable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of light to heavy automotive, construction and power driven equipment.
Ability to perform semi–skilled tasks such as minor carpentry and cement work.
Reasonable knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in the operation of medium and heavy vehicles.
Ability to operate heavy and medium equipment safely, skillfully, and according to applicable traffic rules and regulations.
Knowledge of materials, methods and tools used in maintaining recreational areas, trees, lawns and other landscaping.
Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with the public and other employees.
Requirements
Requirements:
- Graduation from an accredited high school or a G.E.D. equivalent.
o Diploma or official, sealed transcripts REQUIRED with application - One (1) year experience performing general maintenance work.
- Two (2) years experience in operating a truck or related medium construction equipment.
- Possession of a valid commercial driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in the state of Michigan with the proper endorsements.
- Driving record must meet City’s standards for insurability.
Pay rate: $24.14/hour - $35.44/hour (After 5 years)
