Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of Instructor in the SIUE Suzuki Program. Minimum requirement of a master's degree in performance or music education. The successful candidate should have a record of teaching Suzuki students for at least 5 years, plus SAA registration of Suzuki violin training through Book 10, Suzuki cello training through Book 4, and viola training as a bonus. Kodaly and Orff training is highly preferred and demonstrated experience teaching music literacy and music and movement classes is necessary in this role. Documented experience working collaboratively with a group of teachers is required.

The department offers degrees in classical performance, jazz performance, music education, theory/composition, music history/literature, musical theater, and music business. The music degree programs are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. Our alumni work in all music fields worldwide.
The SIUE Suzuki Program, approved by the SAA as a long-term training program, has been an integral part of the Music Department since the University was founded. Established by John Kendall in 1965 as the first national university long-term training program, it currently serves an average of 200 students (birth-adult) in the Edwardsville Community through Suzuki lessons taught by other faculty members and graduate students.
Duties within the Suzuki Program
Teach pre-college Suzuki violin, viola, and cello students in private lessons and weekly group classes.
Provide assistance in all aspects of the program including community outreach, parent education, performances, and other duties as required.
Terms of Appointment Full-time, academic year appointment beginning Fall 2026 Applicants will be subject to a background check prior to an offer of employment.

Qualifications
Suzuki / SAA registered training in violin books 1-10 and cello books 1-4
M.M. (or equivalent) degree in violin, viola, or cello - Performance or Music Education
Demonstrated experience in recruiting and retaining students from a diverse population
Commitment to excellence in teaching and Suzuki philosophy
Demonstrated experience collaborating with colleagues within and beyond one's primary Suzuki program/studio.
Experience teaching music literacy and music and movement classes
Documented experience working collaboratively with a group of teachers

Unedited teaching video segments (max 15 minutes) for 3 different levels of your own studio students (not institute teaching): beginning (Books 1-3), intermediate (4-6), advanced (7+). One video must be of a cello lesson.
Unedited teacher performance videos: 2 contrasting works of your choosing at the level or above Suzuki violin book 6 on violin and Suzuki cello book 4 on cello, one video on each instrument.
Unedited teaching video segment (max 15 minutes): Violin or cello book 1 level group class, or a reading/music literacy group class at an early music reading level.
Provide accessible links for all video submissions via a streaming service such as YouTube, Vimeo, etc.
