About us
Spire Surgical Center is a physician-owned, AAAHC-accredited ambulatory surgery center. Our cases today are mostly interventional pain procedures, with occasional spine cases, and we plan to expand our services. We are pursuing Medicare certification. You'll work directly with the physician owners and leadership team, with quick decisions, real authority, and no hospital bureaucracy.
Ready for your first leadership role? Experienced charge nurses ready to step into a director role are encouraged to apply. You'll have established policies and procedures, written clinical protocols, and hands-on support from our physician leadership as you grow into the role.
Why this role
- Help shape a growing center: own clinical readiness for our upcoming Medicare certification survey, and help build the nursing side of new services as we expand
- Predictable schedule: about 4 procedure days a month, with no nights, no on-call, and flexible administrative hours
- Small, collaborative team with direct access to leadership
- Room to grow: hours expand as we add services and increase case volume
- Retention and survey bonuses, which are rare for a part-time role
What you'll do
Clinical leadership on procedure days
- Lead nursing care from pre-op through PACU, and work in whichever area is needed on procedure days (pre-op, procedure room, or recovery)
- Start each procedure day by orienting the pre-op and PACU nurses and medical assistants, and make sure everyone understands their role and assignments for the day
- Monitor staff throughout the day and adjust assignments as needed to keep cases moving safely
- Make sure documentation is complete for every patient before discharge: vitals, allergies, medication review, consents, pregnancy test results or waivers, and discharge criteria
- Review all charting at the end of each procedure day and close the center
- Escalate clinical concerns to the proceduralist and the Director of Anesthesiology
Staffing and scheduling
- Own Spire's clinical staffing: hire, orient, and supervise RNs, surgical techs, and medical assistants
- Review and approve the procedure schedule prepared by our surgical office staff
- Verify licenses and certifications, and maintain annual competencies (anesthesia recovery monitoring, sterile technique, PRP handling, emergency response)
- Conduct performance evaluations and approve nursing staff hours and timecards
Supplies, medications, and equipment
- Track medication expiration dates and manage controlled substances (counts, discrepancies, waste documentation)
- Manage inventory and order anesthesia supplies, IV equipment, and other clinical supplies
- Maintain crash carts and emergency equipment, and run emergency drills (malignant hyperthermia, codes, transfers)
- Make sure oxygen supply is working, adequate, and reordered on time
- Track annual equipment inspections and preventive maintenance
- Verify that cleaning staff complete and log gurney inspections
Accreditation, compliance, and quality
- Own clinical and nursing readiness for Spire's Medicare certification survey, working with our Practice Administrator, and be available on survey days
- Keep the center survey-ready for AAAHC, CMS Conditions for Coverage, CDPH, and Cal/OSHA
- Own nursing policies and procedures, and review them at least annually
- Lead infection prevention: hand hygiene audits, sterilization oversight, and surgical site infection surveillance
- Take part in the quality improvement committee (QAPI) and track adverse events, transfers, and near-misses
- Handle nursing-related patient complaints and grievances, and manage staff injury and exposure reporting (e.g., needlesticks)
- Maintain required logs: sterilizer, refrigerator/temperature, crash cart, and PRP/implant lot logs
- Help plan and implement new services, including nursing protocols, staffing, supplies, and staff training
- May support accreditation maintenance for an affiliated satellite site (documentation oversight)
