Description
Position OverviewSince 1873, the social sorority and fraternity organizations have grown to become a vital part of the University of Kansas' history and tradition. Today, the sorority and fraternity community represent over 40 organizations with more than 4,800 students committed to five core values: Academic Achievement, Civic & Community Engagement, Belonging, Personal & Professional Development, and Holistic Wellness. Sorority and Fraternity Life (SFL) is an administrative unit of the University which provides support and advocacy for these organizations. The organizations are represented by four different Governing Councils; the Interfraternity Council (IFC), the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC), the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), and the Panhellenic Association (PHA).
The Communications Coordinator reports to the Senior Associate Director for External Relations of Sorority & Fraternity Life. The Communications Coordinator designs strategic messaging campaigns and unique communications tools to enhance the Sorority and Fraternity Life community, including using print and digital media to highlight council and chapter initiatives that contribute to SFL Community Standards. The Communications Coordinator collaborates with SFL staff, student leaders, campus partners, and external constituents to highlight community values and respond to emergent needs related to the sorority and fraternity experience at KU.
Job Description
65% Communications Development and Support
- Develop digital tools to support SFL goals and community standards, including the use of graphics, video, social media, and other electronic communications.
- Develop and implement strategic social media campaigns to highlight SFL goals, community standards, positive events for councils/chapters, risk reduction strategies, and important community reminders.
- Maintain the department website and seek opportunities to create web-based resources for constituents.
- Maintain regular departmental newsletters or similar communications tools for various constituent groups.
- In collaboration with the Senior Associate Director and SFL staff, identify emergent needs in the SFL community and develop appropriate communications tools to support constituent needs.
- Collaborate with departmental staff and the Office of Admissions to enhance, create and implement outreach programs including, but not limited to programming for incoming high school and transfer students.
- Provide strategic communications support for other Student Affairs units as needed and approved by the Senior Associate Director for External Relations.
- Establish and maintain collegial relationships and collaborations with chapter and council leadership, advisors, inter/national headquarters, university/community stakeholders, and local law enforcement agencies. Communicate with constituents as needed to design and implement strategic campaigns.
- Assist with emergency communications to the SFL community as needed.
- Manage the departmental email, phone, and the calendar.
20% Program Management & Operations
- Work collaboratively with Intake/Recruitment officers to execute the recruitment activities. Support formal and informal recruitment processes for all SFL councils.
- Collaborate with SFL staff to create educational, and leadership development programs for the various membership elements of the fraternity and sorority community.
- Manage and maintain rosters, grade report records, and officer information for chapters following KU FERPA policies and procedures.
- Manage the officer coding for KU Endowment
10% Assessment
- Create SFL annual report, as well as strategies (report, scorecard, social media, etc.) to communicate annual SFL Community Standards results to internal and external constituents.
- Manage, compile, and distribute council statistical information and database reports, including grade reports, in collaboration with SFL staff.
- Coordinate the evaluation and assessment of designated departmental programs.
- Contribute to the overall Student Affairs assessment efforts and reporting.
5% Other Duties
- Serve on University committees external to Sorority and Fraternity Life when asked by the Senior Associate Director for External Relations of Sorority and Fraternity Life.
- Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, marketing, graphic design, communications, or related area with one year of related experience.
- Experience developing websites, newsletters, social media, graphics, videos, or other communications strategies for an organization, as evidenced in application materials.
- Experience designing and executing strategic communications campaigns to engage different constituencies within an organization, as evidenced by application materials.
- Prior work experience serving college students, as evidenced by application materials.
- Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
