Description
The Australian & New Zealand Council for the Care of Animals in Research & Teaching Ltd (ANZCCART) is seeking to recruit an experienced leader to serve as Chair of its Australian Board for a three year term with possibility for extension. This position is honorary (with reimbursement for direct expenses) and is open only to Australian residents.
Established in 1993, ANZCCART provides leadership to stakeholders across the scientific, animal welfare and broader communities on ethical and scientific issues relating to the use of animals in research and teaching.
Operating at a national level in both Australia and New Zealand, ANZCCART offers guidance, training and informed engagement in a neutral forum. Stakeholders include universities, research institutes, government, animal welfare organisations, Animal Ethics Committees, the media and the general public.
ANZCCART Australia operates as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee (ACN 063 383 522). Its principal sponsors are Universities Australia, CSIRO and the Royal Society Te Aprangi (New Zealand). ANZCCART New Zealand is a committee of the Royal Society Te Aprangi with separate sponsors to ANZCCART Australia; the Chair of the New Zealand Board is an ex officio member of the Australian Board.
Responsibilities include:
- Chair scheduled monthly Board meetings.
- Support the Board and ANZCCART Australia in meeting key objectives and good governance.
- Provide general guidance and attend weekly briefings with the Administration Manager and Operations Manager.
- Represent ANZCCART Australia in engagements with key stakeholders.
- Provide general oversight of ANZCCART Australia’s operations.
The Chair and Board are supported by the part-time roles of Administration Manager, Operations Manager and Project Officer. Most meetings are held by video link.
Although the office is based in Adelaide, onsite attendance is not required and working remotely is welcomed.

Applications are encouraged from professionals with the following attributes:
- Knowledge of good corporate governance practices for not-for-profit organisations and requirements for an Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) registered organisation and Australian Institute for Company Directors (AICD) (Members preferred).
- Experience on a not-for-profit Board or similar role involving organisational leadership, strategy development and implementation.
- Experience or professional interest in one or more areas relevant to scientific research, animal welfare, ethics, communications or finance.
- A strong commitment to ANZCCART’s objectives including best practice in the responsible and ethical use of animals in research and teaching and an understanding of the ‘The 3Rs’ principle (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement of animals in research).
