About SER: The Society for Ecological Restoration is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with more than 5,000 members in 130+ countries. The society consists of 16 regional chapters, 3 thematic sections, and more than 35 student associations. The Society’s mission is to advance the science, practice, and policy of ecological restoration to sustain biodiversity, improve resilience in a changing climate, and re-establish an ecologically healthy relationship between nature and culture.

Position Overview: 

Description: The part-time, fully remote Fellow will work alongside Robin Chazdon, Project Manager and the Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR) Expert Committee, to help develop and implement  the 8-week Online ANR Practitioner Training Program (PTC), a 3-year program funded by the Ecosystem Restoration Integrated Program of GEF8 and hosted by the Society for Ecological Restoration. The PTC will be offered annually for three years (2026, 2027, 2028) in multiple languages (English, Spanish, Portuguese and French). Each week, participants will complete two self-guided training modules and participate in a 45-minute online interactive session. An advanced short course (webinar style, 1-2 sessions) will be offered each year. The learning program will be hosted on the United Nations Development Programme’s Learning for Nature Platform. Key responsibilities of the Restoration Fellow are to assist with a wide variety of aspects of the overall program, including implementation of live online interactive sessions; archiving translated materials and resources for training modules and interactive sessions; PTC evaluations and course completion certificates; and coordination of the advanced course.

The Fellow should have education and experience in a restoration-related field and experience with restoration practices on the ground. Editorial experience, as well as fluency in Spanish, French, or Portuguese in addition to English, are assets for the position.

The Fellow reports to Robin Chazdon and to Interactive Session Coordinator, Sarah Wilson (for interactive session involvement).

Position level: Fellowship (entry level, with knowledge and understanding of ecology and ideally ecosystem restoration)

Contract Details: Beginning February 15 or as soon as possible; position is for approximately 200-225 hours of work per year and the annual contract can be renewed twice (through 2028).  

Work schedule and location: SER is a fully remote-work organization with colleagues located around the globe; the project team currently has two staff; both in North America. The Fellow position is part-time with a flexible schedule to be agreed upon between the Fellow and the Project Manager. Anticipate non-standard hours for collaboration. At least for 2026, PTC work will be concentrated in the first 6 months of the year.

Primary Responsibilities

• Work alongside Robin Chazdon and ANR Expert Team to prepare publicity and application form for both programs and implement selection process for PTC and COP participants (~10 hours)
• Work alongside interactive session coordinator Sarah Wilson and ANR Expert Team to plan and implement weekly interactive sessions using Zoom interface combined with other interactive tools (8 weeks/year @~2 hours/week; total of 16 hours). 
• Working alongside Robin Chazdon and ANR Expert Team to facilitate handling of review process and archiving of translated versions of 16 training modules from English to Spanish, Portuguese, and French (16 modules @ 4 hours each; total of 64 hours). 
• In 2026 only: work alongside Robin Chazdon and ANR Expert Team to format and archive working and final versions of 5 ANR Factsheets and 6 ANR Guidance Briefs and ensure review of final translations from English to Spanish, Portuguese, and French (11 documents @ 4 hours each; total of 44 hours).
• Work alongside Robin Chazdon and ANR Expert Committee to implement PTC course evaluations, (3 hours).
• Work alongside Robin Chazdon and ANR Expert Committee to implement a Zoom-based ANR Advanced Course (1 course/year; 18 hours).
• In 2027 and 2028 only: Work alongside Robin Chazdon to format, facilitate translations  and archive 12 ANR case studies with a standardized format (12 case studies @ 4 hours; total of 48 hours)

Compensation, Benefits, and Work Environment

• Total hours/year: 215 hours/year (average of 18 hours/month)
• Salary: $25/hour ($5,500/year); depending on location this may be a contract position. 
• Duration 2026 with potential to renew for 2027 and 2028

Requirements

Essential qualifications, relevant experience, and skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in biology, geography or other natural resources field;
• Familiarity with ecosystem or ecological restoration concepts and practices; 
• Experience with handling documents and assembling and archiving PDF files;
• Experience with online tools, such as Zoom, including break-out groups and interactive platforms. 
• Fluent in written and verbal English communication.

Preferred qualifications, relevant experience, and skills:

• Masters degree in restoration-related field. 
• Experience with restoration practices on the ground. 
• Editorial experience.
• Fluency in written and verbal Spanish, French, or Portuguese in addition to English.
