Veterinary Specialty Hospital of Palm Beach Gardens is looking for a Veterinary Technician Lead to join us as part of the Thrive Pet Healthcare community.
As a Veterinary Technician Lead you’ll play an important role in pets’ lives by providing end-to-end care for our precious patients. Your life-changing work will range from the hands-on care of facilitating outpatient treatments and performing laboratory tests, to support services including admitting and discharging patients.
Role Responsibilities:
While under the supervision of the Hospital Director, the Veterinary Technician Lead must be able to effectively and accurately perform the following duties that include but are not limited to:
- Work with the administrative team to develop standards, tools and processes within the training programs (in-house and/or outsourced) and map out annual training plans for technical, client care, and other departments as necessary to support organizational goals and objectives.
- Assist in designing, preparing, and identifying educational aids and materials to support staff training.
- Lead the new hire training for assigned trainee(s) on treatment floor.
- Conduct organization-wide training needs assessment and identify skills or knowledge gaps that need to be addressed.
- In collaboration with the Hospital Director, evaluates training effectiveness by assessing application of learning to job performance, recommending future training programs.
- Use known education principles and stay up to date on new training methods and techniques. Communicate the training status of new employees to the Hospital Director.
- Work a variety of shifts as needed for staffing and training.
- Candidate must be detail oriented and have the veterinary technician skills as listed below:
- Able to monitor and care for patients
- Have nursing skills to include proper animal restraint, anesthesia monitoring, catheter placement, phlebotomy, and performing treatments
- Have previous training experience and follow training protocols and guidelines
- Have knowledge of anesthetic protocols used for emergency and other specialty patients
- Have knowledge of running in house lab machines and sending lab samples out
- Have knowledge of positioning and taking radiographs, as well as sending them out for radiology interpretation
- Have knowledge of triage for new consultations and rechecks, and the ability to discuss estimates for diagnostics, procedures, and/or treatments with clients.
- Have a sound knowledge of all Surgery procedures and processes
- Have sound medical terminology knowledge and common disease processes and medical emergencies Have the ability to train assistants and technicians at all levels, including advanced skills such as ventilator operation, placement of central lines, sampling catheters, urinary catheters, and feeding tubes.
- Cleaning, stocking, and helping to maintain proper care of the hospital equipment
- Good communication skills with the clients and can provide nursing care for ER and specialty patients.
- Knowledge and experience with CT Scan is a plus
- Works with the Hospital Director to assist evaluations of the technicians and assistants as scheduled
- Effectively communicate feedback on performance with nursing staff
- Upholding the culture and value of Thrive and VSH and being a role model for existing and new employees.
Experience & Skills Requirements:
- License preferred but not required; Veterinary Technician Level 2 skills required
- Proper canine/feline restraint techniques
- Phlebotomy experience (basic blood draws)
- At least 3 years’ experience as a vet assistant or technician in specialty/emergency preferred
- Good attendance
- Positive personality

- Be able to lift up to 50lbs
- Be flexible to scheduling needs up to 29hrs weekly
- Willing to learn and participate and collaborative conversation
- Basic understanding of canine and feline illnesses

Work Environment:
This job operates in a veterinary hospital setting. Normal vocation environment risks associated in this setting as related to the operation of industry specific equipment, treatment of and exposure to clientele, and health hazards related to disease and specialty care. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and printers.
Physical Demands:
This position will require at least 10 hours of walking/standing/crouching/bending, lifting/ pushing/pulling between 1-50lbs, and sedentary work.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time position. Evening, weekend, and holiday work will be required as job duties demand, as well as availability by phone and/or email for emergency-related questions, concerns, emergencies, and staff inquiries. Additionally, on call is required for emergency surgical procedures.
