Description
Position OverviewThe University of Kansas GEAR UP program hires college students to work as Academic Tutors in Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools. Tutors will provide before, during and after school support services with program participants. We look for KU students in a variety of majors who have a strong dedication to helping youth and a desire to make a difference.
Job Description
90% - Attend to individual learning needs by assisting students in subject content preparations for class/tests. Review important concepts relevant to subject tutored. Assess learning progress and preparedness of students. Establish an environment of patience, encouragement, and rapport with students. Be punctual and consistent in attendance for tutoring sessions. Check in with GEAR UP staff regularly for scheduling, information/assignments. Complete the Activity Log for each tutoring session and turn in as directed by the Site Coordinator.
5% - Complete online timesheets as directed by the Director weekly. Complete all necessary paperwork according to time frames allotted. Keep GEAR UP Staff informed of all problems or potential problems regarding tutoring.
5% - Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
This position is on-site in Kansas City, Kansas public schools.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED equivalency
- 60 credit hours in specific content area
- Direct work experience working with a specific group, requiring a strong commitment to fairness, respect for different perspectives, and creating an accessible educational environment, as demonstrated in application materials.
- Knowledge of key areas and available community resources, as demonstrated in application materials.
