Summer Intern Position Summary:
The Summer Intern is a positive team player who supports our mission to build resilience through outdoor adventure by facilitating programs with our participants. The summer intern helps set the tone for programming with a caring, supportive, attentive, and encouraging presence. The ideal summer intern focuses not only on the highest level of physical safety of the element but also on the emotional safety of the participant and group. The summer intern is a curious learner, an excellent communicator, and has a heart that aligns with our mission.We are located on a beautiful 575-acre farm and forest where we offer shared housing for six interns with partial board for the summer.
We partner with other nonprofit organizations to roster the majority of our camps, which include youth impacted by parental incarceration, youth affected by gun violence, and those who have faced other adverse childhood experiences. We have 50+ unique partnerships across 26 counties in Central Kentucky. Most of our camps are designed for youth ages 8-12 and include activities such as a challenge course, equine-assisted learning, archery, canoeing, mindfulness, and nature connection. Our work changes lives. We are eager to recruit interns ready to work hard, be a part of an incredible team, and make a lasting impact on our community.
Job duties and responsibilities:
Completes pre-program tasks including but not limited to the facility readiness, physically set up elements, review program plan, review group goals, and readiness to warmly welcome group upon arrival.
Facilitates program utilizing a trauma informed approach and being attentive to the participant while mindful of group dynamics.
Completes post-program tasks including but not limited to the proper return of equipment, physical sites returned to pre-program status, photos processed, consent forms processed, and debriefing with program team always looking toward quality improvement and ways we can do better.
Learns and follows industry standards for use and care of all equipment.
Empowers, encourages, and celebrates participant growth through role modeling, group facilitation, unconditional positive regard, and trauma-informed language.
Demonstrates a working knowledge of risk management policies, procedures, emergency response and management plans.
Participates in staff meetings when scheduled, seeks out and shares ways to improve workplace communication, wellness, collaboration and innovation.
Communicates with Operations Director and team any problems, changes, and opportunities for growth when evaluating program effectiveness, and offers suggestions for improvement.
Eagerly engages in training as assigned and pursues professional development opportunities to expand competency and program effectiveness.
As with all positions at LAC, this position extends beyond work as a role model to youth in our community, especially regarding trauma-informed care, growth mindset, respect, communication, leadership and teamwork-values promoted in our programming.
Provides services in a manner that respects individual dignity and cultural heritage.
Drive company vehicle for programs including drop off and pickup off campus
Other duties as assigned
Expectations:
Adaptive to varying schedule, as well as the ability to work on weekends and occasional overnight programs.
Applicant must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and sit or stand for extended periods in an outdoor setting.
Applicant must be able to perform by hiking, biking, climbing, and paddling in extreme conditions (hot, humid, rain) for extended periods.
Applicant must be willing to commit to be responsible for other duties as assigned including and not limited to: Food Service and Farm, Facility, and Equipment Maintenance.
Each Summer Intern is expected to become trained and to facilitate or co-facilitate all areas related to programming provided at LAC. This includes and is not limited to: challenge course, equine, waterfront/canoe, trauma-informed practices, and archery.
Summer interns will receive certifications in First Aid/CPR and food handlers during training
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent
Strong ability to connect with trauma affected populations
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Willingness to learn and eager to engage in trauma affected populations
Driver’s license
Must complete pre-hire background check and drug screening

Operations Director
Housing and Compensation
$5,000 Stipend from May 18th - August 7th
Free on-site housing in shared, rustic cabins
Free on-site meals when programming camps and large groups
Shared Kitchen and living space
Access to hiking and Mountain Bike trails
Located near both Lexington and Louisville, KY
$300 bonus if current lifeguard certification valid through end of spring. Summer completion bonus up to $1,000
