Job Description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Specialist III, Chemistry Lab assists the Lab Coordinator and Faculty with preparation of labs and provides routine lab support. Troubleshoots or escalates issues as they arise, ensures proper preparation and maintenance of laboratories and equipment. Aids in the training of student workers and new faculty regarding proper use of equipment, procedures and regulations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Supports the Science Lab Coordinator and Chemistry faculty in the preparatory labs
2. Performs maintenance and administrative tasks for Physics and Geology
3. Performs preparation and inventory for chemicals, solvents, and supplies
4. Properly handles and disposes of chemicals and other hazardous materials
5. Maintains logs and records of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), chemical and equipment inventories, equipment instructions, keys to models, lab notebooks, etc.
6. Provides routine lab support including all aspects of lab safety and preparedness, cleaning, inspection and maintenance of lab classrooms, equipment, and supplies
7. Maintains chemistry lab inventory
8. Supports equipment usage and maintenance
9. Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned

• Ability to instruct and supervise student assistants

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:

• Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
• Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
• Work is performed in a climate-controlled office and/or laboratory environment with exposure to safety hazards typical in a laboratory (working with chemicals, live specimens, moving equipment, etc.)
• Safety protocol must always be strictly followed
• May include evening and weekend hours

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or GED and at least 3 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Completed core coursework in Chemistry, Biology, and/or Biotechnology
• Associate degree or higher

Salary

Hiring salary range is $33,540 - $38,571

Lone Star College provides a hiring salary range for all posted full-time non-faculty positions. Where your salary offer would fall in that range is determined by your related experience and education.
