Job Description:
Reporter, Investing and Markets
The Wall Street Journal is seeking a reporter to cover the people and forces shaping markets-someone who can take the pulse of Wall Street and deliver compelling, revelatory stories.
You will go beyond the numbers to tell the stories of investors who make and break fortunes. Macro traders betting on the fate of nations. Hedge funds sparking wild stock swings. Succession dramas at the biggest investment firms. Asset managers venturing into exotic products in search of profits. Quants and market-makers jockeying for advantage. Individual investors embracing risky bets, from options to prediction markets.
The markets are the circulatory system of the global economy; their ups and downs have profound effects on people, businesses and governments. A major task is to decode and explain these swings at moments when it seems the whole world wants to understand them. You will be a player on some of the biggest storylines in business, including whether the trillions of dollars flooding into artificial-intelligence investments are a bubble and whether the U.S. will continue to be the preeminent destination for global capital.
The ideal candidate is a sharp writer who can translate nuanced information for our highly engaged audience, and a skilled newshound who can unearth scoops. This reporter should be comfortable with video and audio, and enjoy experimenting with storytelling formats. We're ideally looking for someone with a solid working knowledge of financial markets and the economy, as well as the political dynamics that shape Americans' attitudes about the country's financial health. A desire to collaborate with colleagues in other coverage areas is a must.
This position will be based in New York and will report to Markets Editor Aaron Kuriloff.
You will:
-Write with flair about the biggest people and themes on Wall Street.
-Cultivate sources across the investing world, including traders, fund managers and other key players.
-Develop expertise that bolsters the Journal's standing as an indispensable source of financial news.
-Plan and execute stories across a variety of newsroom teams and platforms.
You have:
-At least 5 years of experience as a business or finance journalist
-A curiosity about the global markets, including how they work and how they impact people, businesses and politics.
-The ability to analyze data quickly and tell complicated stories in creative ways
-The range to deliver revelatory features, profiles and scoopy news stories.
-A sharp sense of what digital audiences are looking for.
-A commitment to upholding the Journal's standards to ensure stories are accurate, fair and of impeccable quality.
To apply, please submit a resume, cover letter and five published writing samples by April 10th. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and we encourage early submission as the position may be filled before the deadline.
