The Regional Dean and Assistant DIO has a secondary reporting relationship to the Chief Academic Officer (CAO) of the More in Common Alliance and the Bakersfield Memorial Chief Medical Officer.

Scope
Reporting directly to the Interim Dean, the Regional Dean and Assistant DIO, with a matrixed reporting relationship to the Chief Medical Officer for the CommonSpirit Bakersfield market, will work with the Interim Dean as well as the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Affiliations to establish a new MSM regional and remote campus in Bakersfield, California. The Regional Dean and Assistant DIO for the Bakersfield market will have two roles. First and foremost, the Regional Dean and Assistant DIO will be responsible for leading the establishment of a regional medical campus of the Morehouse School of Medicine in partnership with the Bakersfield Memorial and Bakersfield Mercy Dignity hospitals along with other external partners necessary to provide the 6 core rotations needed for and LCME accredited regional medical campus.
In addition, as assistant DIO, the individual will support the oversight and administration of MSM's ACGME-accredited programs, as well as ensuring compliance with the ACGME Institutional, Common, and specialty/subspecialty-specific Program Requirements. The Regional Dean and Assistant DIO will work with the program directors and hospital leadership to foster an inclusive community of graduate medical education (GME) faculty, staff, residents, and fellows of the highest quality. With oversight and development of five (5) or more new GME Programs and fellowships in coordination with the SOM and partner hospital finance teams. This leader will collect, display and analyze data as well as drive continuous process improvement on program and institutional quality indicators, including an Annual Update for each program, Annual Program Evaluations, Annual Institutional Review, ACGME Faculty and Resident Survey data, CLER visit reports, Site visit reports, Graduate Performance data, Faculty Development Data, and Program Director development for Bakersfield. All activity in the GME space will be under the supervision of the Morehouse School of Medicine DIO.
The Bakersfield Regional Dean and Assistant DIO represents the School of Medicine in external matters pertaining to Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education in the Bakersfield market. Working closely and collaboratively with others, the Regional Dean and Assistant DIO directs and manages the intersecting and cross-functional activities of the academic programs and affiliations in support of MSM regional campus development, educational programs, administrative and financial operations. In addition, the Regional Dean and Assistant DIO works with the Interim Dean, Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Affiliations and Chief Administrative Officer of the More in Common Alliance as well as faculty leaders on mission-based budgeting and strategic planning, development, and implementation of the undergraduate education program and regional campus development. The Regional Dean and Assistant DIO will develop short and long-range strategic goals and objectives, conceptual designs, and documentation for assigned areas.
The position works collaboratively with other decanal leaders in medical education and educational affairs. The successful candidate will be an exemplary mentor who is committed to the success and wellbeing of students and invested in the development of faculty and staff.
Responsibilities
Working closely and collaboratively with the faculty and staff, the Regional Dean and Assistant DIO of Morehouse School of Medicine/More in Common Alliance Campus creates and monitors central processes for the campus and rotation sites and undertakes the following key responsibilities:
As an institutional GME leader, the Regional Dean and Assistant DIO will ensure excellence across the following core competencies:
Maintaining the Institution’s ACGME Accreditation
Maintaining the Institution’s Residency Programs’ ACGME Accreditation
Improving the Institution’s Education Program
Developing and Supporting Residency Program Directors
Managing the Institution’s GME Budget and Advocating for Resources
Managing and Representing the Institution’s GME Operations
Overseeing the Well-being of the Institution’s Residents
Providing Guidance on GME Legal Matters
Functioning Effectively in the Larger Medical Context
Working in the Health Policy Context
Developing further as a GME Leader
Developing new residency programs
Rotation Sites and Regional Campuses
Provides leadership, administration, and oversight of the developing regional campus.
Leads the execution of objectives and tactics designed to further the development of the regional rotation site and campus.
Under close collaboration with the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Affiliations and the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and as a direct report to the Interim Dean, this leader provides day-to-day administrative support for the regional rotation site and campus affiliated with the Morehouse School of Medicine.
Provide oversight of external academic partnerships, affiliation agreements, and onboarding of faculty associated with the regional rotation site and campus.
Continuous quality improvement monitoring needed to be in compliance with ACGME / LCME standards for accreditation as they relate to regional rotation site and campus.
Evaluation, implementation, and reporting for new academic partnerships.
Participates in the development and monitoring of the strategic plan.
Develops key local and regional relationships with potential feeder schools for targeted recruiting.
Develop key local, regional and national relationships to fulfil the philanthropic need of UME/GME and pathway programs.
Works with MSM pathways team and local, regional groups for the establishment of pathway programs designed to expand the pool of competitive applicants to become matriculants at Morehouse School of Medicine.
Clerkships
Ensures alignment and use of best practices for systems, tools and technologies utilized by the clerkships and elective rotations.
Assist clerkships with the development and maintenance of these tools.
Along with the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Affiliations and the CAO, conducts clerkship site visits on a regular cadence, including prepping meeting materials and background information as relevant.
Communication, Relationship Building, and Inclusion
Oversee quality improvements in these domains.
Develops and oversees a cohesive strategy for communicating curricular and main campus information with students, faculty, and staff at the developing regional campus.
Serve as the primary liaison to hospital administrative partners for the regional site.
Ensures that public facing materials concerning the curriculum, the hospital relationship, regional faculty, and staff are up to date and representative of Morehouse School of Medicine’s best interest as well as the best interest of students and faculty. This may include updates and maintenance of the More in Common Alliance website, in close collaboration with the More in Common Alliance marketing manager.
Facilitate social media content generation for Morehouse School of Medicine, local and CommonSpirit Health social media accounts regarding the MSM regional campus site.
Build and foster relationships with target hospital administration.
Build and foster relationships with community, undergraduate and pathway programs.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Interim Dean, the Chief Administrative Officer of the MiCA or the Chief Medical Officer.
Academic - Clinical
Clinical practice can occur either at Bakersfield Memorial, Bakersfield Mercy or clinical facilities or affiliated sites.
Academic/Education Responsibilities in addition to those above:
Ensure timely collection of mid clerkship and end of clerkship evaluations.
Ensure each approved 4th year rotation objectives are provided.
Provide letters of recommendation for 4th year students.
Academic - Research
Develop regional medical campus research opportunities with students and residents in collaboration with the faculty and program directors.
Submit one education related abstract and/or peer reviewed paper annually.
Requirements
The candidate
Education / Certifications / Scholarship
Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in a related field.
Possess Board Certification in a clinical specialty.
Ability to obtain licensure/eligibility to practice within the parameters of state/local jurisdiction of California.
Knowledge and Experience
A minimum 5 years of experience in medical education, preferably both UME and the development, organization, administration, and delivery of teaching in undergraduate medical education.
A minimum 3 years of experience in medical education leadership is preferred.
Show a record of research or scholarly activities appropriate for the academic appointment as an Associate professor or higher.
Demonstrate appropriate administrative experience and a proven record of academic and administrative leadership qualities.
Demonstrated leadership ability with a proven record of success in communicating and working with all levels of an academic and medical environment.
Retain university-quality skills and clinical judgment.
Experience developing and managing budgets.
