DNV Energy System is seeking a Head of Section - Civil Engineering, to set and execute the strategy and vision, and to support our customers through all of their current and future advisory needs. The Head of Section offers strategic leadership, achievement of operational results, people management, networks to on-board new customers and services, and seeks new ways to delight current customers to ensure repeat business with our engineering consulting services. They will be aware of market opportunities where we can differentiate, change business models, and lead innovation initiatives. They will work closely with our independent and owner's engineering teams, and independently within their department, on commercial opportunities to strengthen and expand the business, including driving the doer/seller culture, and adapting the service offerings to respond where customers perceive the greatest level of market risk within Civil Engineering. They direct service line activities and drive technical competence development within the section, aligned with Energy Systems strategy.
The Head of Section has a strong focus on delivery, utilization, and efficiency within the section. They partner with key account managers and regional segment managers in delivering a harmonized global customer experience while stimulating collaboration within their section/team as well across the organization. They must ensure that they have the right number of staff with the right capabilities and strives for a high-performing, collaborative culture and exceptional employee experience.

This position can be located in our Austin, TX; Houston, TX; Medford, MA; Portland, OR; and Seattle, WA offices, presenting a dynamic hybrid schedule where employees will typically spend three (3) days per week working from either a DNV office or client location/site. Further details regarding role-specific requirements will be shared during the interview process. Other DNV offices may also be considered.
What You'll Do
- Ensures an efficient & consistent delivery of services in line with customer expectations.
- Manages and improves business performance through delivery, cost efficiency, strong project manage/oversight, proposal development, workforce planning, and utilization.
- Drives, develops, and executes strategies and business plans, digitalization, innovation, and continuous improvement to maintain industry leadership.
- Leads business development, market positioning and maintains strong relationships with customers, ensuring a healthy sales pipeline through the section's engineering consulting services.
- Provides top-quality technical and data-driven services.
- Empowers employee growth and retention through evaluations, development plans, coaching, mentoring, and training.
- Creates a flexible workforce focused on automation to optimize workflows, handle variable workloads, improve quality and consistency, and delivers with clear, direct, solution-oriented execution.
- Fosters a culture grounded in DNV company values.
- Ensures employees have the required technical competences, and drives recruiting efforts within the section.
- Collaborates with the regional leaders to enhance the service portfolio and capture customer opportunities.
- Identifies and leverages business prospects through strategic planning and civil engineering consulting services.
- Strengthens partnerships with key stakeholders, positioning DNV as a preferred consultant.
- Promotes effective data management and organizational practices.

DNV provides a reasonable range of compensation for this role. The actual compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors, including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and specific location. The range of starting pay for this role is $155,000 - $190,000 USD.

About you
What is Required
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering is required.
- 5+ years of relevant industry experience is required in construction and design.
- Track record of leading, mentor, and training civil engineering teams with different knowledge and skillsets.
- Strong understanding of the project development lifecycle, project financing customer (debt and equity) needs.
- Proficient in handling difficult conversations, such as on scope and budget issues or differences in technical methodologies on diverse technical topics, while strengthening relationships.
- Growth mindset with proven track record in anticipating market trends in the US and Canada, devises and delivers on strategy, and shifting technical competencies and services to match Customer needs.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to drive thought leadership in the industry.
- Possesses a digitally curious mindset and has knowledge in AI, automation and digital tools, with demonstrated experience in continuous improvement activities.
- Commitment to build their personal internal and external network and expand this network for the benefit of the Section.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 25% of the time domestically and internationally to conferences, customer meetings, project sites, agencies, and internal meetings.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

What is Preferred
- Master's degree in Civil Engineering with practicing knowledge of the principals, reliability standards, and regulations.
- Knowledge of renewable energy financing, 3rd party advisory and root cause analysis.
- Experience leading winning proposal efforts for Customers in the renewable energy industry.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) or other technical accreditation such P.Eng., P.Geo, P.Biol., etc.
