Some of what you'll be doing:
As an Environmental Program Manager, you will help lead the Port of Seattle’s Maritime Building Energy program to achieve the Port’s Century Agenda and Maritime Climate and Air Action Plan. In this role, you will use your expert knowledge of building energy program management, and building systems, to lead resource efficiency and decarbonization programs and strategy development for the Port’s 80+ buildings and facilities across 12 campuses.
- You will manage complex, high-visibility, and politically sensitive projects/programs, exercising sound judgment within established policies and procedures.
- You will lead compliance with Washington State’s Clean Buildings Performance Standard (CBPS), Seattle Energy Code, Benchmarking requirements, Building Tune-Up Law, and Building Emissions Performance Standard (BEPS), serving as the responsible compliance lead.
- You will review project designs and specifications and develop resource conservation and decarbonization strategies using data tracking, analysis, and financial metrics.
- You will collaborate with representatives across the Port’s Maritime lines of business to advance sustainable building outcomes and provide responsive support.
- You will communicate complex technical information to senior leadership, elected officials, and members of the public, clearly conveying relevance, risks, and opportunities.
- You will coordinate building system studies, analyses, and environmental review processes to ensure environmental sustainability and regulatory compliance.
- You will develop data-driven recommendations and represent the Port’s interests with state, federal, tribal, and local regulatory agencies and stakeholders.
- You will direct consultants and contractors; develop contracts; manage consultant budgets; provide lead direction to Environmental Management Specialists (EMS), Senior EMS employees, and/or interns; and facilitate meetings, negotiations, and additional Maritime Environment and Sustainability initiatives.
Requirements
- Experienced – You have four (4) years of professional experience in environmental, sustainability, and/or built environment fields.
- Desired – We hope you have bachelor’s degree in environmental or physical sciences, sustainability, engineering, economics, environmental management, sustainable building science, architecture, planning or policy. We hope you have three years professional experience in building energy use analysis. We hope you have the credentials required to be a “qualified person” as defined by the Washington State’s Clean Building Performance Standard.

- Data-Driven Analysis & Decision Support – You analyze complex research, building performance data, and financial metrics to develop clear, actionable recommendations. You evaluate alternatives, assess risk, and inform strategic decision-making for sustainable building outcomes.
- Effective Communication & Stakeholder Engagement – You communicate complex technical information clearly and persuasively to senior leadership, elected officials, regulators, and the public. You listen to stakeholders’ needs, tailor messaging appropriately, and support informed discussions, negotiations, and decision-making.
- Influence & Collaboration – You lead and influence cross-functional teams, consultants, and stakeholders without direct authority. You foster collaboration across Maritime lines of business, provide guidance and feedback to Environmental Management Specialists (EMS), Senior EMS employees, and interns, and model the Port’s RAISE values in advancing sustainability initiatives.
What else you need to know:
- Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role.
- Work Environment - This work will take place in a hybrid/in-office setting at Management’s discretion.
- Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
- Safety Requirements – You will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
