Looking for something different? Join our progressive team! The Department of Emergency Medical Services invites you to apply to be our first EMS Pharmacist. This vital role ensures the safe and effective distribution of medications to support our first responders in their life-saving work by overseeing and managing all administrative and operational aspects of the Virginia Beach Department of EMS pharmacy program. Additional responsibilities include procurement, budget, and inventory control. Ensures adherence to policies and procedures that meet federal, state, and local guidelines that ensure safe controlled medication storage, distribution, access, and use wherever they are utilized. Appropriately storing, distributing, and handling controlled medications and other equipment/supplies. Responsible for education and training of EMS staff. Works under the general supervision of the EMS Chief or their designee and oversight of the EMS Medical Director.
This position is at will and serves at the pleasure of the City Manager and is not considered part of the merit service as defined in City Code, section 2-75.
The EMS Pharmacist will:
- Provide Pharmacy oversight
- Assign work to pharmacy personnel according to workload demand and availability of personnel.
- In coordination with the Medical Director, develop and deliver prehospital pharmaceutical and pharmacokinetic related training(s).
- Coordinate with other personnel and EMS Medical Director.
- Assist with staff training, incident & medication administration incident reviews.
- Develop policies and procedures relating to the provision of pharmacy services.
- Assist in developing the drug formulary for use in the EMS Department.
- Prepare the annual budget for the pharmacy.
- Participate as a member of workgroups including protocol development group.
- Trains, disciplines, evaluates, and provides performance management to pharmacy staff.
- Assures full compliance of pharmacy operations with all applicable laws and regulations.
- Ensures that appropriate levels of pharmaceutical supplies are maintained.
- Order, manage, and dispense medications.
- Consults with clinical staff regarding appropriate and available medication.
- Evaluate, monitor, and react to drug availability/shortage concerns.
- Reviews incidents for interactions and dosage error.
- Maintains accurate and up-to-date records in coordination with the EMS Medical Director.

Requirements
MINIMUMS:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelors of Science degree in Pharmacy/Pharmacology. Plus, a minimum of three (3) years experience in clinical and/or retail pharmacy operations including work in preparing, packaging, dispensing medications and administrative pharmacy work.
Must have a current and valid drivers license.
Must be a current Licensed Pharmacist with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy and be in good standing.
Must have a current and valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) license and maintain that licensure for the duration of employment in the position.
