Summary
The West Campus Analytical Core (WCAC) at Yale University has an opening available immediately for highly qualified, highly motivated applicants for the position of Director, with a focus on mass spectrometry. WCAC is a university service provider supporting the entirety of the Yale research enterprise with an emphasis on research being conducted within the multidisciplinary institutes on West Campus.
The Director of the WCAC provides scientific, strategic, and operational leadership for a complex, multi-technology analytical research core supporting a broad and evolving portfolio of Yale faculty research. The Director sets the scientific vision of the core, ensures excellence in service delivery, and advances WCAC’s role as a campus-wide and external research partner. Reporting to the Director of West Campus Cores, the Director oversees personnel, instrumentation, finances, safety, and strategic growth of WCAC. The role requires deep expertise in analytical technologies combined with demonstrated leadership in core facility management, faculty engagement, and long-range planning. The Director serves as the primary ambassador for WCAC and is accountable for mass spectrometry performance, uptime, preventative maintenance, and quality systems across multiple platforms, ensuring reliable and reproducible data delivery.
Essential Duties
- Define and implement the scientific vision and strategic direction for WCAC, aligning core capabilities with current and emerging faculty research needs across Yale.
- Evaluate, expand, and refresh the analytical service portfolio to maintain WCAC’s competitiveness and relevance.
- Provide consultation and training for several mass spectrometers including Orbitrap, Q-TOF, and QQQ platforms.
- Provide overall leadership for WCAC operations, ensuring high-quality, reliable, and cost-effective services.
- Oversee planning, acquisition, installation, and lifecycle management of major analytical instrumentation.
- Manage budgets, recharge models, service contracts, and long-term financial planning in partnership with core administration.
- Build and sustain strong partnerships with faculty and serve as key personnel on grant and equipment proposals.
- Recruit, supervise, and mentor core scientists and technical staff, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration.
- Ensure compliance with laboratory safety, regulatory requirements, and university policies.
- Represent WCAC within the broader scientific community and engage vendors and external partners.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in a related discipline and five years relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education, and experience.
- Significant scientific expertise in analytical technologies supported by WCAC.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex scientific operations and shared research facilities.
- Strong communication, leadership, and strategic planning skills.
PREFERRED: PhD in a relevant discipline and experience in both proteomics and small-molecule mass spectrometry.
