POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Technology provides districtwide leadership for the planning, development, implementation, and oversight of instructional and operational technology systems in alignment with the District’s mission, vision, goals, and Instructional Strategic Plan. Reporting to the Executive Director of Operations/Superintendent (or designee), the Director ensures reliable, secure, and equitable access to technology that supports teaching, learning, and efficient district operations. This role collaborates closely with instructional leadership to promote effective technology integration, culturally responsive practices, and alignment with state and national standards. The Director of Technology oversees technology infrastructure, digital platforms, service delivery, budgeting, staff supervision, vendor relationships, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations, while providing strategic guidance to district leadership and the School Board on technology initiatives and priorities.
District Technology Leadership and Strategic Direction
- Establishes and leads Technology Department priorities, initiatives, and services with the District’s mission, vision, goals, and Instructional Strategic Plan.
- Provides districtwide leadership to anticipate emerging needs and ensure high-performing, reliable technology services for schools, departments, and the broader educational community.
- Leads the adoption and implementation of industry-standard best practices, methodologies, tools, and programs.
- Ensures district awareness of and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and legal requirements related to technology use, data privacy, and information security.
Instructional Technology Leadership and Educational Collaboration
- Collaborates with the Instruction Department, Teaching and Learning, district administrators, and principals to support student learning through effective, equitable, and consistent technology integration.
- Communicates the District’s vision and goals related to teaching, learning, and instructional technology to staff, families, and the community.
- Identifies, evaluates, and promotes the use of technology to support educational best practices, culturally responsive instruction, and the diverse academic, social, and accessibility needs of students.
- Aligns district instructional technology initiatives with state and national standards and frameworks for technology literacy.
- Leads and supports districtwide professional learning to promote effective and consistent use of technology by all staff.
Technology Systems, Infrastructure, and Service Delivery
- Provides leadership and oversight for the planning, implementation, distribution, maintenance, and lifecycle management of district technology platforms, systems, and devices.
- Oversees mission-critical infrastructure and systems, including directory services, servers, archival and custom applications, cloud-based collaboration tools, and business systems used across central office and school sites.
- Ensures the implementation, maintenance, reliability, and security of district technology systems and digital environments.
- Oversees the technology service desk and support functions to ensure timely, effective technical assistance for students and staff.
- Plans and manages large-scale technology deployments and equipment distribution and collection.
Technology Planning, Evaluation, and Continuous Improvement
- Systematically plans for and implements new and improved technology solutions that maximize district resources and leverage external services and partnerships.
- Develops and maintains multi-year and annual technology action plans that translate strategic priorities into sequenced projects, including defined timelines, responsibilities, milestones, and implementation cycles.
- Coordinates the selection, feedback, implementation, and training processes for new district technology systems and digital tools.
- Researches, evaluates, and shares emerging technologies and instructional applications; collaborates with instructional leaders to ensure compatibility and optimal functionality of district hardware, software, and digital content.
- Manages access to and implementation of digital instructional resources for teachers, students, and administrators.
- Develops and administers surveys and feedback mechanisms to assess the effectiveness of technology programs, services, and initiatives.
Governance, Policy, and Board Engagement
- Advises the Superintendent, Executive Director, and School Board on district technology planning, priorities, initiatives, and progress.
- Manages and monitors progress toward School Board priorities related to instructional and operational technology.
- Advises on and supports the development and implementation of district policies related to technology acquisition, inventory, maintenance, acceptable use, data privacy, and Internet safety.
- Ensures compliance with federal and state requirements related to Internet safety and filtering (CIPA).
Resource Management, Fiscal Oversight, and Vendor Relations
- Develops and manages budgets and expenditures related to the technology levy, capital projects, and the Technology Department.
- Negotiates and manages contracts with vendors, consultants, and service providers to ensure cost-effective, high-quality technology solutions.
- Oversees purchasing, inventory, and lifecycle management of computers, peripherals, audiovisual equipment, and related technology assets.
Staff Leadership and Professional Practice
- Supervises, evaluates, and supports technical and technology support staff; fosters a culture of professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Provides leadership in delivering responsive, customer-focused technology services across the district.
- Develops, coordinates, and supports technology training and professional learning resources for staff.
- Maintains confidentiality and exercises professional judgment in all aspects of the role.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS-EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree or Advanced Degree in a field appropriate for this position (Information Systems, Information Technology, Computer Science, Systems Management, Educational Technology or other
equivalent disciplines) required. - Five (5) years technology leadership experience involving instructional design, interdisciplinary collaboration, and technology integration.
- Experience working in a school-district setting with knowledge of educational computing applications and philosophies preferred.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Technical knowledge of networks and computer trouble-shooting; ability to manage multiple projects; ability to create and edit written material.
- Knowledge of data privacy practices and laws, CIPA compliance and acceptable use policies. Experience with Macintosh-based computing environment, iOS devices, Google Apps and Chrome platform.
- Ability to articulate strategy and ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and administrators to develop and implement uses of technology; strong communication skills.
- Knowledge of classroom technology including desktop and mobile devices, document cameras, sound systems, projectors, cameras, etc.
- Experience with 1:1 and other large-scale technology initiatives, including deployment, instructional implementation, and management.
- Experience with Canvas LMS (preferred) or other learning management systems.
- Ability to engage and work effectively with all stakeholders (students, parent community, and staff) on various organization-wide committees.
- Ability to select, train, lead and evaluate staff to support teacher professional development as it relates to technology.
- Ability to set a vision and course for technology in support of the District’s mission and lead successful, district-level instructional improvement efforts.
- Knowledge of WA State Technology Standards, Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, state assessments, and current pedagogical practices.
