Job ResponsibilitiesKey responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Essential Job Functions
- Provide effective leadership to a diverse, 24/7/365 newsroom staff, setting daily priorities and ensuring smooth content execution across broadcast and digital platforms.
- Provide direct oversight of the Executive Producer, ensuring strong editorial leadership, clear communication, and alignment with newsroom priorities across all platforms.
- Manage and oversee the station's Assignment Desk, directing daily coverage planning, breaking news response, story assignments, and resource deployment to ensure efficient, accurate, and competitive news coverage.
- Have direct oversight of the newsroom's digital operations, including the station website, mobile app, and all social media platforms.
- Oversee editorial decision‑making, content flow, and newsroom operations in alignment with station goals, brand standards, and audience expectations.
- Manage station reporters and MMJs, guiding them through story development, field execution, writing, and multi‑platform content presentation.
- Ensure maximum exposure of news products on air and through web, mobile, OTT, social, and emerging platforms.
- In conjunction with the Executive Producer, ensure newsroom management provides final script approval for all stories published or broadcast across digital and on‑air platforms.
- Collaborate with leadership to develop new and innovative content for both digital and on‑air products.
- Maintain high standards for accuracy, ethics, breaking news responsiveness, and newsroom communication.
- Act as a key newsroom leader capable of stepping in for senior leadership when needed.
Content Strategy & Execution
- Grow the station's audience by ensuring content meets brand expectations and is optimized for each platform.
- Lead and oversee daily editorial planning for broadcast and digital coverage.
- Drive the development of new storytelling formats and creative editorial approaches.
- Work under the direction of the News Director to ensure editorial cohesion across broadcast, digital, and social platforms.
- Monitor performance metrics and audience insights to refine coverage strategies.
- Lead daily editorial meetings with clarity, efficiency, and accountability.
Staff Leadership & Development
- Directly manage reporters and MMJs, providing clear editorial guidance, feedback, and coaching.
- Oversee newsroom schedules and staffing to ensure consistent and comprehensive coverage.
- Lead training, development, and coaching initiatives focused on storytelling, writing, and digital best practices.
- Assist with hiring, onboarding, and performance management.
- Build a collaborative, accountable newsroom culture with high editorial standards.
Digital & Platform Oversight
- Oversee all newsroom digital publishing operations, including website, app, and social media output.
- Ensure digital content aligns with on‑air coverage while maximizing platform‑specific strengths.
- Coordinate digital workflows to support breaking news, enterprise reporting, and audience engagement.
Innovation & Market Leadership
- Apply best practices, utilizing research findings, audience insights, and industry trends to strengthen the station's market position.
- Encourage experimentation with new platforms, formats, workflows, and tools.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of newsroom experience with demonstrated leadership responsibilities including a proven track record of leading reporters, MMJs, and content teams.
- Strong editorial judgment, strategic thinking, and ability to manage competing priorities.
- Deep understanding of multi‑platform news distribution, including digital and social operations.
- Excellent communication, organization, and decision‑making skills.
- Ability to stay composed and decisive in breaking news situations.
- Proficiency with newsroom systems, content management tools, and analytics platforms.
- Experience contributing to or overseeing digital content strategy.
- Familiarity with performance analytics, SEO, and audience engagement.
- Ability to innovate around formats, workflows, and multi‑platform content delivery.
- Must be able to work flexible hours including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Must demonstrate integrity, ethical conduct, and sound editorial judgment at all times.
