- Director for Faculty Development Center
Description
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for the position of
Director for the Faculty Development Center (FDC). UMBC is a Carnegie R1 research
university known for its inclusive excellence, innovative teaching, and diverse student body.
Reporting to the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, the Director of the FDC will lead UMBC’s
efforts to realize its vision as a national leader in pedagogical innovation and evidence-based
teaching. This is a transformative leadership opportunity; following a comprehensive 2025 selfstudy
and external review, the incoming Director will be charged with implementing strategic
recommendations to redefine the Center’s mission, organizational structure, and goals
appropriate to an R1 campus.
As a catalyst for institutional change, the Director will foster cross-unit collaborations and
partner with departments and units to design, implement, and evaluate high-impact initiatives
that enhance student learning across all modalities. The Director will serve as a prominent voice
in campus-wide pedagogical conversations—ranging from the advancement of inclusive
excellence to addressing the role of AI in pedagogy. The successful candidate will be a
visionary leader committed to strengthening the FDC capacity to serve a diverse faculty
community and elevating the culture of teaching and learning at UMBC.
Providing strategic leadership for faculty professional development, the Director will foster a
culture of research-informed instruction. As a “scholar-practitioner” who bridges the gap
between educational research and classroom practice, the Director will support scholarly
teaching and the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) for faculty at all career stages. This
includes overseeing robust Faculty Learning Communities, certificate programs, and the
Hrabowski Fund for Innovation, as well as individual consultations with faculty. Additionally,
the Director will supervise and mentor the FDC staff, ensuring that all workshops, resources, and
events—including the annual Provost’s Teaching and Learning Symposium—are grounded in
evidence-based practices and aligned with the Center's evolving strategic goals. The Director
will be expected to work closely with other units on campus to support faculty success.
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience ($134,000-$151,000). This position is
full-time and includes a full university benefits package.
For best consideration, submit by Interfolio a cover letter, resume/CV, teaching philosophy
