Description
The Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County is a nonprofit charitable law firm dedicated to ensuring equal access to the justice system for the low-income, disadvantaged and traditionally underserved residents of Palm Beach County.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Deputy Director is responsible for the day-to-day legal services delivery of the Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County, Inc. This position serves as second-in-command to the Executive Director and provides strategic leadership for program management, legal services supervision, and administrative functions. The Deputy Director ensures program quality, compliance with funder requirements, and effective coordination across all agency units. The Deputy Director reports directly to the Executive Director. Performance is evaluated on an annual basis by the Executive Director.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operational/Programmatic
- Responsible for the management and oversight of mission-based programs and services that meet the legal needs of targeted populations.
- Responsible for implementation, oversight, and maintenance of the client conflict resolution procedure.
- Responsible for managing and oversight of the applicant appeals and client grievances.
- Assist Supervisors when working with clients, making decisions on difficult case evaluation and case acceptance, and resolving ethical questions.
- Manage all services delivered by Legal Aid staff and supervise all outreach programs and activities.
- Coordinate with the Grant Compliance Officer to ensure all programmatic reports and documents are prepared and delivered as required by funders.
- Establish program planning and evaluation processes for organization projects.
- Lead and mentor project supervisors and ensure that legal team members have the continuing training needed to maximize program efficacy and growth.
- Assist project supervisors and Director of Philanthropy in identifying new opportunities for partnerships and new funding streams.
- Facilitate and coordinate inter-team projects e.g. act as project director to monitor and report on outcome measures.
Personnel Management
- Directly supervise, coach, mentor and evaluate all project supervisors.
- Participate in the interview, selection and hiring process for attorney and legal administrative staff positions through coordination with the Director of Human Resources and Executive Director.
Financial
- Oversee the development of project budgets during the annual budget process, utilization of grant funding and monitoring performance while ensuring adherence to best practices for sound fiscal management.
- Assist the Executive Director in processing financial information to ensure the fiscal and operational integrity of programs and services.
Executive
- Support the Executive Director in preparing relevant documents and reports for Board of Director meetings.
- Perform designated duties of the Executive Director in their absence, as directed by the Executive Director or Board of Directors.
Requirements
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience
- Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from A.B.A. accredited law school required.
- Member in good standing of The Florida Bar (or eligible for admission).
- Minimum of seven (7) years of legal practice experience, with at least five (5) years in poverty law or civil legal services and substantial litigation experience
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible management and supervisory experience.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex organizations with multiple program areas and funding sources

SALARY RANGE: Salary range depending on experience. Full benefits package in addition to salary includes:
- Vacation leave earnings equal 2.4 weeks a year (beginning the first of the month after 30 days of employment) and increases to 3 weeks a year after two years of employment.
- Sick leave earnings equal 2.4 weeks a year (beginning the first of the month after 30 days of employment).
- 11-13 paid holidays per year (depending on court schedule).
