Mural Conservator / Architectural Conservator

Job Description:
§ Conserving and restoring murals and other works of fine and decorative art.
§ Traveling to jobsites around the US including buildings of historic, architectural, and religious significance.
§ Creating investigative site reports with photographic documentation to outline treatment suggestions.
§ Preparing material samples for analysis and testing.
§ Evaluating and monitoring a safe work environment according to OSHA standards.
§ Ordering and scheduling delivery of materials.
§ Reading and interpreting construction documents.
§ Working with clients and project managers to ensure timeliness and quality.
Requirements
Qualifications:
§ Education: Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Science, or 3-4 additional years of professional experience.
§ Experience: 5-7 years of hands-on experience with large-scale projects involving conservation of paintings and decorative finishes; decorative painting techniques such as: gilding, glazing, trompe l’oeil, woodgraining, faux stone and marble, and stenciling.
§ Demonstrated knowledge of industry standards and best practices within preservation, restoration, and conservation approaches.
§ Experience with paint stabilization, in-painting, cleaning, and varnish removal.
§ Documented portfolio of past treatments.
§ OSHA 30 and Lift Certification, or the ability to obtain these qualifications before employment.
§ Comfortability with active construction sites and environments.
§ Must be able to travel extensively throughout the U.S.
§ Must be able to work at great heights on scaffold and lifts.
§ Must have the physical ability to carry 50 pounds.
§ Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications:
§ Graduate Degree / Certificate in Paintings Conservation, Restoration, Historic Preservation or similar advanced study within the field.
§ American Institute for Conservation (AIC) Professional Associate Status.
§ Proficiency in decorative painting techniques such as gilding, glazing, trompe l’oeil, woodgraining, faux stone and marble, and stenciling.
Compensation is commensurate with experience and includes:
