Description
Alex Vindman for Florida is seeking an experienced and disciplined Communications Director to
lead the campaign’s message development and earned media operation in one of the most
competitive political environments in the country.
The Communications Director will design and execute an aggressive, strategic earned media
program; oversee message development; and build strong working relationships with local,
state, and national media. Florida’s diverse media markets require a communicator who
understands regional dynamics, rapid response pressures, and the demands of a high-profile
statewide campaign, garnering national attention. Experience with the Florida press corps and
Spanish proficiency are a plus.
This position is based in the Fort Lauderdale, Florida area and reports directly to the Campaign
Manager. The Communications Director will manage communications staff and coordinate
closely with consultants and senior leadership.
Requirements
Responsibilities:
Earned Media Strategy
Develop and implement a comprehensive earned media plan aligned with overall
campaign strategy and electoral goals.
Identify and drive proactive media opportunities across Florida’s major media markets,
including Miami, Tampa Bay, Orlando, Jacksonville, and South Florida Spanish-language
outlets.
Build and maintain strong relationships with reporters, editors, producers, and digital
journalists at the local, state, and national levels.
Pitch stories, secure interviews, and respond to press inquiries in a timely and strategic
manner.
Message Development
Lead message development in partnership with the Campaign Manager, senior staff, and
consultants.
Draft and oversee the drafting of press releases, statements, talking points, op-eds,
speeches, debate prep materials, and other communications collateral.
Ensure message discipline and consistency across the campaign.
Candidate Preparation
Prepare the candidate and senior surrogates for interviews, debates, press conferences,
and public appearances.
Conduct media prep sessions and develop briefing materials tailored to outlet, audience,
and format.
Staff high-profile interviews and press availability as needed.
Rapid Response
Build and lead a disciplined rapid response operation, including monitoring news cycles,
opposition attacks, and emerging narratives.
Draft timely responses, statements, and counter-messaging in coordination with senior
leadership.
Anticipate and prepare for potential vulnerabilities and high-pressure media moments.
Team Leadership and Coordination
Supervise communications staff and establish clear workflows, approvals processes,
and deadlines.
Coordinate closely with the Digital, Organizing, Political, and Finance teams to ensure
cohesive messaging across all campaign activities.
Coordinate with the Social Media team to fully leverage the candidate's large social
media footprint.
Work in partnership with external consultants, including media, polling, and research
teams, to ensure alignment of message and strategy.
Events and Media Availabilities
Plan and execute press conferences, media availabilities, town halls, and major
campaign events with earned media goals in mind.
Ensure events are structured to maximize coverage, visuals, and message amplification.
Develop strategies for surrogate and validator engagement in key media moments.
Qualifications
Two cycles of direct campaign communications experience, or equivalent experience in
public affairs, journalism, or political communications, preferably on a statewide or
federal campaign.
Strong understanding of Florida’s political and media landscape, including regional
market differences and Spanish-language media.
Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce clear, disciplined, and
persuasive messaging under deadline.
Proven track record of building media relationships and securing earned coverage.
Experience managing rapid response in a fast-moving political environment.
