VA Bedford Healthcare System seeks a dynamic, academically oriented leader for its Health Services Research and Development (HSR&D) Center of Innovation jointly based at VA Bedford Healthcare System in Bedford, MA and VA Boston Healthcare System Boston, MA. The center – Center for Health Optimization and Implementation Research (CHOIR) – contains an extensive portfolio (in FY24) of 88 funded research projects and programs, with a total annual budget of over $23 million. The 57 doctorally trained core investigators at CHOIR are highly productive academically and contribute to a large, vibrant pre- and post-doctoral training program for both clinician and non-clinician (MD and PhD) scientists.
The mission of CHOIR is to advance coordinated, patient-centered health care for all Veterans through research and quality improvement. While CHOIR’s research impact goals include Patient-Centered Virtual Care, Whole Health to Address Health-Related Social Needs of Veterans and Shared Decision Making for Precision Oncology, CHOIR investigators have broad expertise across the research spectrum. Other areas of additional, emerging and innovative areas include Aging Veterans and Long-term Care, Electronic Health Record Modernization Research, and Co-design participatory research methodology. Requirements
Potential candidates will be senior MD or PhD investigators with scholarly expertise in health services research and/or one or more of its many constituent fields, with leadership and administrative experience, and with a strong, proven track-record of obtaining peer-reviewed funding. The position will be a full-time appointment based at VA Bedford Healthcare System in Bedford, MA. Candidates should hold or be eligible for an academic appointment as a Professor, Assistant, or Associate Professor at Boston University, UMass Chan Medical School, UMass Lowell or Harvard University. Full salary and benefits package are competitive and commensurate with experience.
The Bedford Co-Director is expected to assume collaborative responsibility for leadership of CHOIR, and to have line authority for the Bedford site. The leadership role includes setting and promoting a vision for conducting research that engages with VA systems and improves care for Veterans. Success will require an understanding of VA funding mechanisms, or the ability to rapidly develop such an understanding. Administrative duties include managing Center research funds, and leading and mentoring research investigators on scientific, professional, and administrative matters.
Competitive candidates for this position will have a record of successful, extramurally-funded research including VA, DoD, and/or NIH grants, a productive record in the conduct of health services research, and have US citizen status. Faculty at the Universities affiliated with CHOIR engage in teaching, research, and service and are expected to collaborate on research projects, mentor students and junior faculty and contribute to the teaching missions of their appointed Department.
