Tenure faculty (regardless of rank) - persons with the titles of professor, associate professor, assistant professor and instructor who serve on appointments totaling 50% or more service to the university and who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. Duties and responsibilities are assigned in accordance with the workload guidelines laid out in the pattern of administration of each faculty member’s tenure initiation unit (TIU) and, as appropriate, regional campus; obligations will include research, service and/or teaching or clinical practice. These faculty will have earned doctorate or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study or possession of equivalent experience.
The Department of Teaching & Learning within the College of Education and Human Ecology (EHE) at The Ohio State University (OSU) invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education within the Primary and Middle Childhood Education Program. We seek a scholar whose research centers on the learning and teaching of mathematics, including conditions and technological environments that advance mathematical thinking of learners within primary and middle childhood education. We prefer candidates with research and teaching interests that include Artificial Intelligence technologies to join a growing community of scholars advancing the AI Fluency Initiative at OSU. We prefer applicants who have also demonstrated interest in the mathematical preparation of pre-service and practicing teachers across K-16 levels.
The successful candidate will contribute to the department’s teacher education mission through innovative research (40% effort), teaching and student mentorship (40% effort), and professional service to the department, college, university, community and professional organizations (20% effort).
Performance Objectives
- Support the Department of Teaching and Learning’s mission and vision.
- Develop and maintain an extramurally funded research program within mathematics education programs.
- Establish an independent line of scholarly inquiry in early and middle childhood mathematics education and build strategic collaborations across disciplines, including potential partnerships within and outside of EHE, particularly the mathematics department.
- Effectively teach undergraduate and graduate courses in early and middle childhood mathematics education, STEAM section, and undergraduate and graduate level courses within the department.
- Actively serve as faculty lead for primary and middle childhood mathematics education program, including collaborating on state-level initiatives, program reviews and accreditation.
- Participate in curriculum development to advance undergraduate and graduate education across various disciplines in the Department of Teaching and Learning.
- Mentor students at the graduate and undergraduate levels in STEM areas to advance scholarship and career-readiness.
- Actively engage with local schools and communities to advance the field of primary and middle childhood mathematics education.
- Engage in academic service, both internally and externally, to advance the missions of the Department and College.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with PK-8 mathematics teachers and students.
- Contribute to the collegial community of the department and engage in collegial collaborations with other faculty on research, teaching and service.
Education and Experience Requirements
Required
- Earned doctorate in Mathematics Education by the time of appointment, with an active record of teaching and service commensurate with experience.
- Advanced coursework in Mathematics Education.
- Established or emerging record of scholarly productivity in mathematics education.
- Evidence that mathematics teaching and/or learning is central to research.
- Minimum of 3 years of primary or middle childhood classroom teaching experience.
- Experience with standards for PK-8 mathematics and standards for the preparation of PK-8 mathematics teachers.
- Demonstrated interest in the mathematical preparation of teachers.
- The position requires an on-campus, face-to-face presence.
Desired: The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong record or clear potential for collaborative, interdisciplinary research that engages faculty across the university as well as partners in local school districts; demonstrated or strong potential for securing extramural research support; expertise in primary and middle childhood mathematics education and teacher education; research interest in AI-driven education and research innovation that supports OSU’s AI-fluency initiative in the teaching and learning of mathematics.
