Job Summary
The faculty member is responsible for the clinical education of Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO) interns in the delivery of patient care at the University Eye Center at Ketchum Health and its affiliated clinics. This position reports to the SCCO Dean and the Chief of the Stein Family Cornea & Contact Lens Center. Clinical assignments are subject to change based on program needs. The position may require a Tuesday through Saturday work schedule and travel to affiliated clinics.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities will include clinical assignments within the Stein Family Cornea & Contact Lens Center, with anticipated future involvement in the didactic curriculum. Workload assignments will be determined by the service department’s needs. The role will be formally reassessed one year after hiring to ensure alignment with program goals and educational objectives.
Core Responsibilities
- Clinical precepting in the Stein Family Cornea & Contact Lens Center
- Clinical application of contact lens principles
- Evidence-based diagnosis, treatment, and management of anterior segment ocular disease
- Diagnosis and management of dry eye disease
- Myopia management
- Effective communication with interns, staff, colleagues, other healthcare providers, and referral sources
- Collaborative engagement with students, staff, professional colleagues, and administrators
- Demonstration of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all interactions
- Adherence to faculty behavioral expectations
Faculty Behavioral Expectations
1. Attendance
- Fulfillment of assigned clinical duties
- Participation in clinic service meetings
- Attendance at clinic development days
2. Role Modeling
- Consistent punctuality
- Professional conduct and adherence to the dress code
- Delivery of high-quality clinical patient care
- Adherence to HIPAA and cybersecurity policies
3. Job Performance
- Clinical documentation, including timely completion and finalization of patient charts
- Maintenance of chart quality and accuracy in accordance with clinical standards
- Timely grading and evaluation of clinical encounters
- Prompt completion of correspondence to referring physicians and agencies
- Timely processing of prescription refill requests and fee sheet adjustments
- Maintenance of clinical privileging standards for primary eye care and contact lens management
- Support of internal marketing initiatives
4. Participation – Service and Clinic Activities
- Participation in on-call rotations
- Serve as fill-in faculty as needed
- Engagement in service department projects
- Participation in clinic development task forces and project teams
- Maintenance of required clinical proficiencies
- Resupply and maintenance of clinical modules
5. Participation – Activities Outside the Clinic
- Support of patient recruitment efforts
- Scholarly posters, peer-reviewed publications, manuscripts, and continuing education presentations
- Participation in collaborative research initiatives
- Additional responsibilities as directed by College and University administration
Requirements
Qualification Requirements

- Possess or obtain by the first day of employment a California Optometry License with Glaucoma Certification
- Certification in specialty contact lenses, such as orthokeratology, myopia management, and scleral lenses, is helpful.
- Successfully pass a thorough background investigation
- Must qualify to receive Federal and State funding. Must not appear on the OIG Exclusion List.
- Be eligible for credentialing and privileging in accordance with SCCO standards.
- Successful completion of an accredited residency in Contact Lenses and/or equivalent experience
Education and/or Experience
- Graduated from an ACOE-accredited institution with a Doctor of Optometry Degree
- Successful completion of an accredited residency in Contact Lenses, and/or gained years of clinical experience within the area of contact lens.
- Previous Clinical Preceptor Experience is helpful.
