- Activity Therapy/Recreational Therapy Intern
Description
Southeast Behavioral Hospital is seeking a motivated and compassionate Activity Therapy Intern to join our multidisciplinary clinical team. This internship provides hands-on learning experience in planning, implementing, and facilitating therapeutic recreational and activity-based interventions for individuals receiving behavioral health services.
The intern will work under the direct supervision of a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) to support patient engagement, promote social connection, and enhance overall wellness through structured therapeutic activities.
Internship responsibilities and learning experiences align with the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) Job Analysis Areas, including assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, documentation, and professional responsibility, to support competency development and CTRS credentialing requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in planning, organizing, and facilitating therapeutic group activities (e.g., recreation therapy groups, leisure education, coping skills, social skills, wellness activities).

Support patients in developing healthy leisure skills, coping strategies, and social interaction abilities.

Help create a safe, structured, and inclusive group environment.

Document group participation and patient progress in accordance with facility policies.

Collaborate with the interdisciplinary treatment team, including therapists, nurses, and other clinical staff.

Assist with preparation of materials and activity supplies.
- Maintain professional boundaries and adhere to confidentiality and ethical standards (HIPAA compliance)
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Pursuing educational requirements through a Recreational Therapy program at a university or college, per National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) standards.
