Position Description:
The University of Louisville is seeking to hire an Academic Advisor I. The TRIO [Educational] Talent Search (TS) Academic Advisor coordinates the counseling program for participants in middle and high school grade levels. The TS Academic Advisor will conduct workshops and provide individual counseling pertaining to students' educational goals and career aspirations. The TS Academic Advisor will also meet with parents, target high school personnel and program staff to monitor student progress toward completing high school. The TS Academic Advisor will coordinate the initial recruitment and selection process for new students. The TS Academic Advisor will also interact regularly with the higher education community to assist students in gaining admission, matriculating, and graduating from competitive postsecondary institutions. The TS Academic Advisor will maintain student files and ensure all proper documentation is collected and filed. The staff member holding this position assists in additional office functions and other duties as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include planning and implementing programs and activities, academic advising, and managing the department's social media. Working with a wide variety of constituents is necessary; this will include students, faculty, staff, and outside vendors.
- Monitor student academic progress by assessing student needs and developing plans to meet those needs.
- Conduct individual and group counseling sessions directed toward personal growth, resolution of behavioral concerns, career choice, and enhancement of social development of participants.
- Coordinate cultural and educational enrichment activities including scheduling, contacting appropriate organizations and arranging for chaperones and transportation.
- Maintain participant records including U.S. Department of Education TRIO [Educational] Talent Search required documents, academic performance, progress evaluation, class attendance reports, results of counseling contacts, and Annual Performance Report (APR) data.
- Maintain BLUMEN database of students and the activities in which they participate. Responsible for ensuring accurate documentation of services for each participant is maintained in every individual participant file, counseling log, and relevant program databases on a monthly schedule and kept current.
- Liaison with participants, along with community agencies, their families and target middle and high school personnel to gather educational information (standardized test scores and grades). Implement follow up mechanisms for former program participants.
- Coordinate initial recruitment and selection process for new students.
- Assist students and their parents with completion of college/university applications and financial aid submissions (i.e., FAFSA).
- Assist students with scholarship searches and completion.
- Meet with fellow staff members to update them on student progress.
- Supervise activities of summer staff; coordinate and conduct the summer tutorial program. Monitor participant academic, personal, and social components.
- Plan and publicize TRIO [Educational] Talent Search program and events.
- Manage the department's social media.
- Attend TRIO programs related conferences and workshops.
- Responsibilities require overnight travel, adjusted work schedule, and evening/weekend hours to conduct workshops or in order to meet deadlines.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in education, counseling, psychology, or related field preferred. Background similar to participant preferred. Experience working with middle and high school students - especially first generation and low income. At least three years' experience in counseling low income, potential first- generation high school students of diverse backgrounds are preferred. Two years' experience working in a TRIO program are preferred. Exceptional oral and written communication skills are preferred. Individuals pursuing this position should have research experience and a strong computing background.
Target Compensation Maximum:
$55,658.00
Target Compensation Minimum:
$37,105.00
Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
